Search "fractional CMO cost" and you get a page of agencies saying "it depends." It does depend, but not so much that the ranges cannot be stated. Here they are, with mine at the bottom so you have at least one real data point.
The market, in four bands
Advisory retainers: $2,500 to $5,000 a month. Two to four strategy sessions a month, async access in between, a quarterly plan. The company's own people do the work. This is the right fit for a founder who is still the marketer, or a first marketing hire who needs senior direction.
Fractional leadership: $6,000 to $15,000 a month. One or two days a week on the leadership team: owning the plan, the budget, the agencies, the hires and the number. The range is wide because "day" varies from eight hours of calls to a real seat with reporting duties. Ask what is included before comparing two quotes.
Embedded or hands-on: $10,000 to $20,000 a month. Leadership plus execution: the person builds the pages, configures the CRM and runs the campaigns. Closer to a senior contractor than a CMO, and often the better buy for a company under $10M that needs things done, not just decided.
Diagnostics and projects: $3,000 to $8,000 for an assessment; $8,000 to $50,000 for builds. The assessment is the step most consultants give away free, which is why it so often turns into a sales call rather than a plan. A priced diagnostic with a deliverable is worth paying for precisely because it is not a pitch.
Hourly, the same work bills at $150 to $350. Monthly retainers are cheaper per hour because the commitment is longer and the consultant can plan around it.
What moves the number
- Industry. Regulated categories (lending, legal, healthcare) cost more because fewer people can work in them without creating risk.
- Scope. Owning a budget and a team is a different job from advising someone who does.
- Stage. A $3M company gets a different cadence from a $40M one, and should pay differently.
- Location. Chicago and the coasts price above the national median; remote engagements blur this.
- Who is on the other side of the table. A consultant reporting to a CEO prices as a peer. One reporting to a VP prices as a vendor.
Against the full-time alternative
A Director of Marketing in Chicago in 2026 runs $140,000 to $180,000 in salary. Loaded, with benefits, payroll taxes and a recruiter, that is $175,000 to $230,000, plus eight to twelve weeks to hire and a quarter to ramp. A VP is north of $250,000 loaded.
A fractional leader at one day a week is roughly $90,000 a year. At two days, $150,000. That is a senior seat for the salary alone of a director, starting in two weeks, with a 30-day exit if it is not working. The fractional model is not cheaper per hour. It is cheaper per outcome for a company that does not yet need forty hours a week of marketing leadership, which is most companies under $50M.
The honest counter-argument: at some size you need the full-time person. The job of a good fractional leader is to tell you when, and to have the function documented so the hire inherits something that works.
My rates, as of Q4 2026
I publish these on the services page and I will keep them current there.
- 30-Day Marketing Assessment: $4,500, flat. The Identify step of the IRMO Playbook: audit, baseline, prioritized 90-day plan with a number attached. Credited in full toward a retainer started within 60 days.
- Marketing Advisor: $3,500 a month. Two sessions a month, async access, quarterly roadmap. Three-month minimum.
- Part-Time Marketing Leader: $7,500 a month for one day a week, $12,500 for two. The seat, the plan, the budget, the agencies, the report. Three-month minimum, then month to month.
- Fixed-fee builds: from $8,000. Websites, HubSpot and Salesforce lead flow, AI content operations. Half on start, half on delivery.
- Workshops: $3,500 half day, $6,000 full day.
How to evaluate a quote
Ask five questions. What is included in a "day"? Who does the work, the consultant or your team? What does the first 30 days produce, in writing? What happens at the end: a renewal pitch or a hand-off plan? And can they show you the number they moved at the last three companies, not the activity?
If the answers are clear, the price is usually fair. If they are not, the price is the least of your problems.
Expect $3,000 to $5,000 a month for advisory, $7,000 to $15,000 for a seat on the leadership team, and a flat fee for the diagnostic. Judge the number against a loaded director salary and the time to hire, not against an agency retainer.
